LEED & Environmental Statement

Horton Automatics provides the following documentation in support of the LEED’s (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) project certification process:

MATERIALS & RESOURCES – Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs):

Horton Automatics has published two third-party verified, product-specific Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) covering its automatic entrance door systems. Both were issued June 1, 2026 and are valid through June 1, 2031.

  • Swing Operator Systems – Covers S4100LE and S4800LE (HD-Swing operators; operator unit only). Declaration No. SmartEPD-2026-136-0881-01. A1–A3 GWP: 103 kg CO₂e per declared unit.
  • Commercial Automatic Sliding Systems – Covers S2000B, S2003, S2001, S2003T, S2022 (header, frame, accessories, doors; excludes glazing). Declaration No. SmartEPD-2026-136-0882-01. A1–A3 GWP: 1,320 kg CO₂e per declared unit.

Both EPDs were independently externally verified and externally critically reviewed under ISO 14025 and ISO 21930:2017, with Smart EPD as program operator. Declared unit: 1 m² of door opening, maintained and operated for 10 years. Life-cycle scope: A1–A3, A4, A5, B6, B7, C1–C4. Market of applicability: North America.

These EPDs support the following LEED credits:

  • LEED v4.1 – MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Environmental Product Declarations. Because Horton’s EPDs are product-specific Type III EPDs with both external verification and external critical review, each is valued at 1.5 products toward the 20-product threshold (vs. 1.0 for an industry-wide EPD).
  • LEED v5 – MR Quantify & Assess Embodied Carbon (prerequisite) and Reduce Embodied Carbon (credit, up to six points). The cradle-to-gate GWP reported in each EPD provides verified product carbon data for project teams to baseline and benchmark against industry averages.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES – Sourcing of Raw Materials (Recycled Content):

Recycled content is now recognized under MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Sourcing of Raw Materials (LEED v4.1) rather than as a standalone recycled-content credit.

There are two types of recycled content: Pre-consumer and Post-consumer:

  • Pre-consumer content means that the scraps and materials that are leftover from the manufacturing process are reused in some way. Typically, this content is less environmentally beneficial since it indirectly encourages inefficient manufacturing processes that produce waste.
  • Post-consumer recycled content means material that, after going through its service life, can be disassembled, recycled or safely disposed of without adverse impacts on water, soil, or air. This type of recycled content is preferred and is used by Horton Automatics.

With respect to the percentage of recycled material used in our products, please note:

  • 30% percent of the value of every dollar shipped by Horton Automatics is aluminum and 50% of the aluminum is post-consumer recycled content.
  • Thus, for every $1,000 worth of Horton material in a given project, $150 ($1,000 x 0.3 x 0.5) or 15% is recycled value. The other components of our door systems (controls, power supplies, belt, hardware, etc.) have negligible recycled content.

It is important to note that in the case of manual systems, such as revolving and ICU solutions, the aluminum content as a proportion of the total value is higher. In these cases, we estimate the recycled value to be 40-50% depending on the system. For manual systems, therefore, it is conservative to use 20% as recycled value.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY – EQ Credit: Low-Emitting Materials (Paints & Coatings):

Paint and coating contributions are recognized under EQ Credit: Low-Emitting Materials, which addresses VOC content and VOC emissions for interior-applied finishes. Paints and coatings applied to interior metal must not exceed the VOC content limits established by the applicable reference standard.

Powder Coat Paint

Fluoropolymer resin-based powder coatings that are electrostatically applied are preferred over liquid paint because they incorporate raw materials that are free of VOC and hazardous air pollutants. Horton Automatics utilizes 100% fluoropolymer resin-based powder coatings as an available paint finish for its products. Horton’s powder coat process also incorporates a chrome-free pretreatment wash, which supports low-emitting and reduced-hazardous-substance criteria.

Anodized Aluminum Coatings

Anodized aluminum extrusions do not contain or produce a significant level of VOC’s. Horton Automatics provides a full range of anodized aluminum finishes for all its products.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES – Sourcing of Raw Materials (Local/Regional Materials):

  • Manufacturing location is Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico
  • Primary aluminum source: Colombia (CO), as declared in Horton’s published EPDs
  • Primary steel source: Brazil (BR), as declared in Horton’s published EPDs
