Automated People Mover Systems

PhotoSince the early ‘70s, Horton Automatics has been providing automatic door equipment for the transit industry worldwide and is currently the only U.S. manufacturer of such equipment. This equipment can be classified as two different products: Station Platform Doors and Vehicle Door Operators. In general, this equipment has been furnished and installed as an integral part of Automated People Mover (APM) systems, although we have furnished doors for some inclined lifts as well. APMs are train systems designed for light to medium duty traffic, primarily in airports, urban business districts, or industrial complexes.

Station Platform Doors are automatic sliding doors (usually biparting) Photo which are integrated into a station barrier wall system used to protect pedestrians from the vehicle guideway in the station area. When a vehicle arrives at a station it will stop so that the vehicle doors will align with the Station Doors. The Automatic Train Operator (ATO) will then command the Station Doors to open and close in sync with the vehicle doors to allow passengers on and off the vehicle. An Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system monitors the closed and locked status of the Station Doors to ensure that all Station Doors are closed and locked prior to a vehicle entering or leaving a station. A modified version of the Series 2001 Belt-Drive Operator is used in this application.

PhotoVehicle Door Operators are automatic sliding door operators (usually biparting) that are used to open and close the egress door(s) on a vehicle. These operators are designed to fit into a small space envelope inside the vehicle and mechanically connect to the vehicle door panels. The operators are controlled by the vehicle ATO and are monitored by the vehicle ATP as mentioned above. A modified version of the Series 2003 Belt-Drive Operator is used in this application.

PhotoThe two products mentioned above are designed for long life, high reliability and enhanced safety. In an environment like a major airport, pedestrian mobility and safety are paramount. Horton has invested a great deal of engineering to facilitate the enhanced communication and monitoring between our operators and the ATO and ATP systems. Developments such as an RS485 serial communication capability on our C2150-1 Microprocessor Control have allowed us to keep up with the cutting-edge technology of APM systems. Some of these developments have been incorporated into our commercial door operators as well.

In addition, Horton is the only automatic door manufacturer with membership on the ASCE APM Standards Committee. Membership on this committee insures that Horton's transit door products will be in full compliance with the safety standard governing this application.
